Be Useful: Seven tools for life, is Arnold Schwarzenegger’s foray into the world of self-help writing. Known as one of the greatest bodybuilders and highest-paid movie stars of all time, Arnold inspired many young men (and women) in the 1990s, 2000s and beyond with his achievements. Now 76 years old, Arnold offers his reflections on how to live life in a rewarding way.

Schwarzenegger’s book argues that “being useful” is the ideal route towards a purpose-driven life. He presents seven tools for readers to unlock their own potential. Written in his powerful, unique and earnest voice, Arnold’s writing is easy to follow and engaging. The reader can almost hear him talking in his distinct, memorable accent as he weaves compelling personal stories into the main points he drives home.

“Don’t just worry about climbing a ladder that someone else has built. No, build your own ladder. Just don’t wait for anyone else.”

One of the seven tools from Be Useful is self-awareness. Having a good understanding of yourself – what makes you “tick”, your weakness and what motivates you – is vital to improving your choices, making them more purposeful. Arnold points out that many people are too caught up in self-pity to practice this. Yet the good news is that we can all choose to try and step out of our heads and take an honest look at our position in life. Where are you now and where are your current decisions taking you? This knowledge can empower you to change for the better.

Another tool is resilience. Ask yourself, how easily do you let yourself be “blown over” when hard times arrive? Undoubtedly, we all encounter difficulties, suffering and setbacks. Yet do we choose to remain in a victim mindset, or do we muster emotional strength to cope with trauma, adversity and challenges? Arnold draws analogies from his bodybuilding days as a powerful illustration. Building muscle and competing in world competitions is no easy feat. Yet having a “conquering attitude” helped him to move his career towards a clear vision – going from success to success.

A third noteworthy tool is adaptability to change. Arnold did not occupy one single role or career, but moved from bodybuilding to acting, to politics and later to activism. Change in life cannot be avoided. Many people struggle to cope when their familiar surroundings, relationships and goals evolve. Yet this is a natural part of life. Having a mindset which embraces change and seeks to make the most of it will be very empowering for many readers.

Overall, Arnold’s book is a fascinating insight into the man behind the muscles. For long-time fans, it will be a fun insight into the mind of a prominent role model. Yet even for dispassionate readers, the seven tools Arnold offers bring a lot of value. We commend this book to you!
